PhD Opportunities for October 2011

Thursday, December 2, 2010

Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy

Applications are invited for studentships for 3-4 year research programmes leading to the degree of PhD. The majority of studentships available are for candidates who meet the EPSRC residency criteria but other sources of funding might be available for very well qualified students.

Information on our main research activities is on our website at www.msm.cam.ac.uk, and prospective candidates are welcome to contact members of the academic staff working in their fields of interest.

In the 2008 RAE, the Department was included in the UK's 4 highest rated science and engineering departments and was the top department in the "Metallurgy and Materials" Unit of Assessment.

The Department is fortunate in possessing world class facilities in the areas of transmission and scanning electron microscopy, mechanical testing, X-ray diffraction and polymer characterisation. Close collaborative links exist with industry and other university departments in the UK and abroad.

The minimum academic requirement for admission is an is an upper second class UK honours degree at the level of MSci, MEng, MPhys, MChem etc, or a lower second with a good Master's, (or overseas equivalents) in a relevant subject.

Application packs are available via our website : www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/applying/ or from Dr Rosie Ward (remw2@cam.ac.uk) who is happy to answer questions about the admissions process and funding opportunities available.

W D ARMSTRONG FUND
PhD Studentships in the Application of Engineering in Medicine

Department of Engineering

Vacancy Reference No: NA05854

Limit of tenure applies*

The Managers expect in 2010 to elect one or two W D Armstrong Studentships, tenable in the University, for full-time postgraduate work in engineering, chemical engineering/biotechnology or medicine.

The holders of the Studentships must undertake a full-time course of postgraduate work in the University approved by the Managers in a field related to the application of engineering in medicine. Applications are encouraged from outstanding candidates with a background in other disciplines who now wish to work in these fields, and from candidates within one of these fields who wish to broaden or change their work to another aspect or aspects of the fields. The Managers will take into account engineering competence and clinical interest and it is also expected that co-supervisors will be identified from both the School of Technology and the School of Clinical Medicine. Applications from candidates who wish to proceed to the Ph.D. Degree or other postgraduate qualification in the relevant field are invited. The Studentships are not normally intended for support of candidates who have already embarked on a course of research leading to a Ph.D.

The Studentships will normally provide full cost support comprising approved College and University fees (at the Home or EU rate as appropriate) and maintenance at the standard EPSRC rate, together with any fee approved by the Managers for training. In fixing the value of the Studentship, account will be taken of other resources available to the student, including other awards held. The Studentships will normally be held, subject to satisfactory progress, for the prescribed duration of the course.

Download application form from www.eng.cam.ac.uk

An application form and forms for referees are available from the School of Technology and should be submitted via the Department of Engineering, the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology or the School of Clinical Medicine. The closing date for receipt of applications and completed reference forms is 31 January 2010.

* Limit of tenure: 3 years.

Closing date: 31 January 2010.
Planned Interview dates: February/March 2010.

PhD Studentships in Turbomachinery Aerodynamics, Propulsion, Heat Transfer, Noise & Instrumentation

Department of Engineering

Vacancy Reference No: NA05827

Limit of tenure applies*

Fully funded EPSRC studentships are available to conduct research at the Whittle Laboratory in fields associated with Turbomachinery Aerodynamics, Propulsion, Heat Transfer, Noise and Instrumentation. The Whittle Laboratory is one of the foremost laboratories specialising in research into the fluid dynamics and thermodynamics of all types of turbomachinery. The available projects range from fundamental studies of fluid dynamic and thermodynamic behaviour to research into complete systems. Specific problem areas currently include the noise emissions and the efficiency of fans, the effects of real geometry on the performance of axial compressors, the life of high pressure turbines, the design of turbine interducts and unsteady flows in axial turbomachines. Most of the projects will use a combination of experiments and computational modelling.

CASE awards may be available for these studentships. All of these studentships are for 3.5 years from April 2010 and are jointly funded by the EPSRC and industry. For UK students and those EU students who have been resident in the UK for the previous 3 years for educational purposes, remuneration will be at the EPSRC studentship rate (currently £13,290/year), with an additional 'top-up' of £3000/year, and all fees paid. For other EU students, this studentship will pay fees and £3000/year only. Overseas students are not eligible and should not apply.

UK or EU students with a good first degree, a masters degree and a strong background in aerodynamics, fluid mechanics or thermodynamics are invited to apply with a CV to the Senior Administrator (jet63@cam.ac.uk) as soon as possible. Decisions to accept students will be made shortly after they apply, until all of the places are filled. The number of studentships is limited.

* Limit of tenure: 3.5 years

Closing date: 19 April 2010. Planned Interview dates: Interviews will be held as suitable applications are received.

The University values diversity and is committed to equality of opportunity.
