PhD Studentship in Energy and Sustainable Development

Sunday, December 5, 2010

Closing date : 30 January 2011
Interview date: 22 February 2011
Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD)
Three years, full scholarship comprising stipend and UK fees

Applications are invited from well-qualified, highly motivated individuals for a PhD studentship, commencing 01 April 2011.

The successful applicant will join a team from the IESD, at De Montfort University, who are part of an exciting €12.8M project funded by the European Commission, which will develop a new kind of enterprise software for the factory of the future. This software will promote 'energy awareness' in the context of production management of future factories to enable them to make best use of available energy resources.

The post is for three years and offers a stipend (currently £13,590 per annum) and fees at the UK (Home) rate; overseas applications are welcomed but fees would be charged at the overseas rate and the student will have to pay the balance.

The KAP project has partners from the European automotive and semiconductor manufacturing sectors, research organisations and universities who are responsible for a range of work packages leading to the creation and demonstration of a new kind of production management tool for industry. The main role of the De Montfort team within KAP is to assist in the creation of a factory-wide hierarchical model of energy consumption and to design an energy monitoring infrastructure to support this model. The model will include a classification of energy carriers and energy using devices appropriate to the factory of the future.

You will join a large group of higher degree students and work alongside other research staff in the IESD's excellent self-contained research base in the renowned Queens Building. You will be provided with excellent facilities and funding for travel, eg to present work at conferences. You will be offered bespoke training necessary for your project.

The Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD) is an internationally leading research institute focusing on energy and sustainability. The scope of its research ranges from the clean and efficient use of energy, to integrated renewable energy technologies and the environmental quality of the built environment. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008), 65% of the Institute's research was rated "world leading" or "internationally excellent".

PhD Opportunities for October 2011

Thursday, December 2, 2010

Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy

Applications are invited for studentships for 3-4 year research programmes leading to the degree of PhD. The majority of studentships available are for candidates who meet the EPSRC residency criteria but other sources of funding might be available for very well qualified students.

Information on our main research activities is on our website at www.msm.cam.ac.uk, and prospective candidates are welcome to contact members of the academic staff working in their fields of interest.

In the 2008 RAE, the Department was included in the UK's 4 highest rated science and engineering departments and was the top department in the "Metallurgy and Materials" Unit of Assessment.

The Department is fortunate in possessing world class facilities in the areas of transmission and scanning electron microscopy, mechanical testing, X-ray diffraction and polymer characterisation. Close collaborative links exist with industry and other university departments in the UK and abroad.

The minimum academic requirement for admission is an is an upper second class UK honours degree at the level of MSci, MEng, MPhys, MChem etc, or a lower second with a good Master's, (or overseas equivalents) in a relevant subject.

Application packs are available via our website : www.admin.cam.ac.uk/univ/gsprospectus/applying/ or from Dr Rosie Ward (remw2@cam.ac.uk) who is happy to answer questions about the admissions process and funding opportunities available.

PhD Studentship in Microelectronics and Nanostructures, University of Manchester

PhD Studentship: Integrated Circuit Design for Advanced 3D Silicon Technologies

Microelectronics and Nanostructures Research Group
The University of Manchester - School of Electrical Engineering and Electronics

Closing date : 25 January 2010
Start date : April 2010
The project
This three-year PhD studentship is associated with an EPSRC-funded project on 'Fine-Grain Parallel Cellular Processor Arrays in 3D Silicon technologies". The student will work with state-of-the-art IC design and test equipment, researching the circuit and system architectures of devices implemented in emerging fabrication technologies that allow stacking of multiple silicon layers in a single device. In particular, design of "vision chips" will be considered. These devices integrate thousands of sensing and processing elements in a massively parallel fine-grain array configuration and provide a high-performance, low-power consumption alternative to conventional vision systems, with a range of applications from autonomous robots to retinal prostheses. The student will investigate the partitioning of processor architecture amongst multiple silicon layers and research circuit/layout design issues. A number of devices will be fabricated and tested during the project, using the latest 3D integration technologies based of Silicon on Insulator (SOI) and bulk CMOS wafers. The project involves international collaboration with partners in Finland and USA.

Candidates should have a degree in Electronics, Computer Engineering, or similar. Background knowledge of digital and analogue circuits and interest in hardware design is required. Some experience in VLSI design would be an advantage.

The project will be carried out in the Microelectronics Design Lab, School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, The University of Manchester. The lab has recently moved to new accommodation, and is well equipped, with industry-standard EDA design tools and IC test equipment. The activities of the lab include adventurous research on novel computer architectures, cellular processor arrays, analogue and mixed-mode circuit design and brain-inspired VLSI systems. More information, including relevant publications, can be found on the lab research web page: http://personalpages.manchester.ac.uk/staff/p.dudek/

Funding
Successful UK/EU applicants will receive full funding for tuition fees and a stipend in the region of £13,000 per year, tax free. Non-UK/EU candidates will receive full funding for tuition fees, however, only a stipend of about £2,500 per year can be offered to such candidates. Please note that overseas students need to demonstrate maintenance funds in the region of £9,000 per year in order satisfy visa requirements, so they will need to obtain additional funding from other sources.

Enquiries
Enquiries should be directed to Dr. Piotr Dudek, School of EEE.
Closing date for applications is 25 January 2010. The three year PhD project will start in April 2010.

Applications
If you wish to apply please email a covering letter, full Curriculum Vitae and the names and contact details of at least two academic references to Ms Marie B Davies
