The project:

The brain is critically dependent on an adequate blood supply to maintain normal function. Disruption of blood supply by blockage (stroke) or bleeding (subarachnoid (SAH) or intracerebral haemorrhage) results in cerebral ischaemia (CI), and can have devastating clinical consequences. CI is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide and despite intensive research effort there are no widely effective treatments. A number of reasons have been proposed for the lack of success in finding successful treatments for CI, including the relevance of the animal models used to date. Research on CI has focussed largely on events within the brain. However, increasing evidence implicates peripheral processes, particularly inflammation, in the aetiology and outcome of CI. Therefore, the failure to address this key aspect of CI pathology may be one reason for the lack of new treatments for stroke and SAH. Refocusing on the primary causes of CI disease may therefore yield more success.

Our recent research demonstrates a rapid change in peripheral inflammatory responses after experimental stroke. Furthermore, a peripheral inflammatory stimulus prior to experimental stroke worsens outcome, which mirrors clinical findings. The overall aim of this project therefore is to further investigate the contribution of peripheral inflammation to CI. More specifically this project will establish whether the brain endothelium and parenchyma in animals with a raised peripheral inflammatory profile is in a 'primed' state, which makes it more susceptible to increased injury in response to experimental stroke and/or SAH.

To achieve the above aim relevant experimental models of stroke and SAH will be used along with immunohistochemical, multiplex and modern bioimaging techniques.

The studentship: This studentship is available to UK and other EU nationals (due to funding criteria) and provides fees and stipend subject to eligibility. Applicants should hold (or be about to obtain) a first or upper second class honours degree in a related area.

The School of Education has a strong profile in providing highly regarded pre-service and postgraduate teacher education in the Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary areas, in which the work in English and Literacies Education plays a key role. Courses are offered both on campus and via distance education. The English and Literacies team through the Centre for Research in English and Multiliteracies Education (CREME) http://www.une.edu.au/creme/ has an extensive research program including large ARC projects in multiliteracies and a large and increasing group of doctoral and masters research students.

The successful applicant will augment the current English and Literacies team, enhancing its expanding role in conducting significant externally funded research projects, supervising higher degree research students and contributing to postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and teacher professional learning.

Essential criteria for appointment include a doctoral qualification in a relevant field of study and professional experience relevant to the education of students in primary or secondary school contexts. The successful applicant will also need to demonstrate knowledge of key research, theories, policies and practices in English and Literacies Education, including current trends, challenges and reforms. For appointment at Senior Lecturer level, applicants will also require a sound record of scholarly publication including papers in refereed journals, experience in the supervision of research higher degree students, evidence of capacity to attract external research funding, and demonstrated success in tertiary teaching.

Experience required

Bursaries

Each Studentship is for a period of three years at the end of which it is expected that the PhD will be completed. The bursary to support each Studentship will cover the full time fees for a home/EU student and a maintenance grant of £6252 per annum. Successful applicants will be expected to undertake some unpaid teaching duties within the Faculty. Overseas students are welcome to apply however they will need to pay the balance between overseas and home/EU fees.

Candidates have from October 5th to November 30th 2009 to apply for the Schlumberger Foundation 2010 Faculty for the Future fellowships.

Faculty for the Future fellowships are awarded to women from developing and emerging economies who are preparing for PhD or postdoctoral study in the physical sciences, engineering and related disciplines* to pursue advanced graduate study at top universities in their disciplines abroad.

Launched by the Schlumberger Foundation in 2004, Faculty for the Future has grown to become a community of 110 women from 35 countries.

The long-term goal of the Faculty for the Future program is to generate conditions that result in more women pursuing scientific disciplines. Grant recipients are therefore selected as much for their leadership capabilities as their scientific talents and they are expected to return to their home countries to continue their academic careers and inspire other young women.

Faculty for the Future grants are in the range of USD 25,000 to 50,000 per year, and may be renewed through to completion of studies subject to performance, self-evaluation, and recommendations from supervisors. The amount of the grant depends on the actual costs of study and living in the chosen location.

Candidates should be enrolled or applying to their selected graduate schools when submitting their Faculty for the Future grant request. Candidates must have a proven track record of teaching experience, demonstrate active participation in faculty life and outreach to encourage young women into the sciences and hold an excellent academic record.
