Applications are invited from well-qualified, highly motivated individuals for a PhD studentship, commencing 01 April 2011.

The successful applicant will join a team from the IESD, at De Montfort University, who are part of an exciting €12.8M project funded by the European Commission, which will develop a new kind of enterprise software for the factory of the future. This software will promote 'energy awareness' in the context of production management of future factories to enable them to make best use of available energy resources.

The post is for three years and offers a stipend (currently £13,590 per annum) and fees at the UK (Home) rate; overseas applications are welcomed but fees would be charged at the overseas rate and the student will have to pay the balance.

The KAP project has partners from the European automotive and semiconductor manufacturing sectors, research organisations and universities who are responsible for a range of work packages leading to the creation and demonstration of a new kind of production management tool for industry. The main role of the De Montfort team within KAP is to assist in the creation of a factory-wide hierarchical model of energy consumption and to design an energy monitoring infrastructure to support this model. The model will include a classification of energy carriers and energy using devices appropriate to the factory of the future.

You will join a large group of higher degree students and work alongside other research staff in the IESD's excellent self-contained research base in the renowned Queens Building. You will be provided with excellent facilities and funding for travel, eg to present work at conferences. You will be offered bespoke training necessary for your project.

About the project:

This is a joint PhD with the Speech & Image Research Group at Swansea University and Laboratoire Informatique d'Avignon at Université d'Avignon et des Pays de Vaucluse.

Over the last 20 years both the Laboratoire Informatique d'Avignon and Swansea University have been at the forefront of international research in the area of speaker recognition. This studentship, directly linked to a new EU Eureka/FP7 programme, aims to enhance the security of transactions over the telephone using speech-based signal processing and new biometric approaches.

Candidate eligibility:

Applicants should be Masters or Bachelor students with a first-class honours degree in a suitable engineering, mathematical or scientific discipline.
A good working knowledge of English is essential; a good knowledge of French is desirable.

The Humanities Research Centre was established in 1972 and celebrated 30 years of excellence in the humanities in 2002. It aims to stimulate scholarship and advance research in the Humanities through its objectives.

The HRC interprets the "Humanities" generously, recognising that new methods of theoretical enquiry have done much to break down the traditional distinction between the humanities and the social sciences; recognising, too, the importance of establishing dialogue between the humanities and the natural and technological sciences, and the creative arts.

The Centre encourages interdisciplinary and comparative work, and seeks to take a provocative as well as supportive role in relation to existing humanities studies in Australia. It aims to give special attention to topics and disciplines which stand in need of particular stimulus in Australia. One of its central functions is to bring to Australia scholars of international standing who will provoke fresh ideas within, and beyond, the academic community.

PhD Studentship in Nanostructured Silicon Thermoelectrics

This fully funded studentship is available to start in 2011, under the supervision of Dr Yimin Chao in the internationally recognised School of Chemistry, UEA Norwich; 100% of research activity classified as internationally leading, excellent or recognised.

Funding is available for UK/EU students. Funding awarded for this project will cover tuition fees and stipend for UK students. EU students may be eligible for full funding, or tuition fees only, depending on the funding source. International students will not be eligible for this funding however they are still welcome to apply for the project but would have to find alternative funding.

Project description :

Energy shortage and climate change are two of the most serious problems threatening our society. The proposed silicon nanocrystal thin film is a hitherto unknown "supra nanocrystallite" structure with extraordinary intrinsic thermoelectric properties. Their thermoelectric properties have not previously been investigated. We believe if the proposed novel silicon supra nanostructure could achieve thermoelectric efficiencies high enough to be used commercially, this could be a new approach towards solving current energy and climate problems. If the mechanism of boosting thermoelectric efficiencies in such supra nanostructures can be elucidated, we expect this would have a very significant impact upon current and future fundamental sciences and technologies. Currently approximately 90 percent of power is generated by heat engines that use fossil fuel combustion as a heat source and typically operate at 30-40 percent efficiency. If they could be made more efficient thermoelectric modules could potentially convert part of this low-grade waste heat to electricity, or act as an alternative to photovoltaic cells for converting solar radiation into electricity. Unfortunately, current thermoelectric materials are limited by figure of merit performance, and are toxic, expensive and have weight issues when implemented. Our intention is to address these problems by developing novel thermoelectric material technology with a high figure of merit and efficient transfer mechanisms between thermal and electrical energy for primarily power generation applications. At the end of this study, we will have a highly efficient thermoelectric module consisting of silicon nanoparticles thin film with large Seebeck coefficient, high electrical conductivity and low thermal conductivity. These studies will enrich science, lead to new understanding and identify novel thermoelectrics on nanoscale materials. Potentially the outcome will impact the thermoelectric materials market significantly and contribute towards tackling of climate change through sustainable power generation.

University of Queensland - School of Chemical Engineering

PhD Scholarship in Process Development of a novel process for recovering a valuable product from an industrial waste.

The University of Queensland is ranked in the top 1% of International Universities according to the Times Higher Education's 2010-2011 World University Rankings. The School of Chemical Engineering is a recognised research strength of the University and staff are associated with six leading research centres. The school is a major research provider to the minerals industry through its metallurgy program, has strong links with industry and has secured a number of strategic partnerships. These collaborations provide for teaching and research programs which are responsive to ongoing industry development.

This project looks at a major problem in the Aluminium industry which is the disposal of approximately 40,000 tonnes per year of a hazardous waste known as spent pot-lining (SPL). It contains significant levels of leachable fluoride and is currently being stored awaiting a suitable treatment technology. The School of Chemical Engineering was awarded an Australian Post-graduate Award (Industry) to develop a novel low-energy and low-cost process for extracting the fluoride from SPL as a useful aluminium fluoride product that can be recycled back into the aluminium industry. If commercialised the benefit will be an end to the stockpiling of SPL in Australia and rest of the world, a more sustainable aluminium industry, and protection of the world's natural fluoride resources. The project is a collaboration between the School of Chemical Engineering and Fluorsid SpA; a fluorochemical company based in Italy.

The role: We are seeking a PhD candidate to join a multi-disciplinary team to develop the novel process. The candidate will carry out experiments looking at both leaching and precipitation. There will be a strong emphasis on the crystallisation of AlF2OH where particle size and purity must meet strict requirements. It is expected that the project will set the candidate up for a career in the aluminium industry, although the chemical principles learned are transferable to many other sectors. The project will involve a period of research in Italy with the sponsoring company.

The person: Applicants should have (or soon to complete) an undergraduate degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or related discipline. Considerable laboratory experience and a strong interest in process development are desirable.
Remuneration: The stipend is valued at $27,000-$30,000 per year, tax free for 3 years. Both Australian and International applicants are welcome to apply.

The Managers expect in 2010 to elect one or two W D Armstrong Studentships, tenable in the University, for full-time postgraduate work in engineering, chemical engineering/biotechnology or medicine.

The holders of the Studentships must undertake a full-time course of postgraduate work in the University approved by the Managers in a field related to the application of engineering in medicine. The CFD Laboratory consists of 15 students and researchers, has a range of in-house CFD solvers used both in academia and industry, houses state of the art computing facilities and provides a first rate environment for research.

The studentships which are available for 42 months, cover all fees and a scholarship starting at £17,800. Students will spend an average of one month per year with the industrial sponsor, and are available to UK eligible students only.

The three projects are :

Together with MBDA, a European defence company in missile systems, numerical methods to simulate the release of stores from internal weapons bays will be developed.

The project

This three-year PhD studentship is associated with an EPSRC-funded project on 'Fine-Grain Parallel Cellular Processor Arrays in 3D Silicon technologies". The student will work with state-of-the-art IC design and test equipment, researching the circuit and system architectures of devices implemented in emerging fabrication technologies that allow stacking of multiple silicon layers in a single device. In particular, design of "vision chips" will be considered. These devices integrate thousands of sensing and processing elements in a massively parallel fine-grain array configuration and provide a high-performance, low-power consumption alternative to conventional vision systems, with a range of applications from autonomous robots to retinal prostheses. The student will investigate the partitioning of processor architecture amongst multiple silicon layers and research circuit/layout design issues. A number of devices will be fabricated and tested during the project, using the latest 3D integration technologies based of Silicon on Insulator (SOI) and bulk CMOS wafers. The project involves international collaboration with partners in Finland and USA.

Candidates should have a degree in Electronics, Computer Engineering, or similar. Background knowledge of digital and analogue circuits and interest in hardware design is required. Some experience in VLSI design would be an advantage.

The project will be carried out in the Microelectronics Design Lab, School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, The University of Manchester. The lab has recently moved to new accommodation, and is well equipped, with industry-standard EDA design tools and IC test equipment. The activities of the lab include adventurous research on novel computer architectures, cellular processor arrays, analogue and mixed-mode circuit design and brain-inspired VLSI systems. The Whittle Laboratory is one of the foremost laboratories specialising in research into the fluid dynamics and thermodynamics of all types of turbomachinery. The available projects range from fundamental studies of fluid dynamic and thermodynamic behaviour to research into complete systems. Specific problem areas currently include the noise emissions and the efficiency of fans, the effects of real geometry on the performance of axial compressors, the life of high pressure turbines, the design of turbine interducts and unsteady flows in axial turbomachines. Most of the projects will use a combination of experiments and computational modelling.

CASE awards may be available for these studentships. All of these studentships are for 3.5 years from April 2010 and are jointly funded by the EPSRC and industry. For UK students and those EU students who have been resident in the UK for the previous 3 years for educational purposes, remuneration will be at the EPSRC studentship rate (currently £13,290/year), with an additional 'top-up' of £3000/year, and all fees paid. The project:

The brain is critically dependent on an adequate blood supply to maintain normal function. Disruption of blood supply by blockage (stroke) or bleeding (subarachnoid (SAH) or intracerebral haemorrhage) results in cerebral ischaemia (CI), and can have devastating clinical consequences. CI is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide and despite intensive research effort there are no widely effective treatments. A number of reasons have been proposed for the lack of success in finding successful treatments for CI, including the relevance of the animal models used to date. Research on CI has focussed largely on events within the brain. However, increasing evidence implicates peripheral processes, particularly inflammation, in the aetiology and outcome of CI. Therefore, the failure to address this key aspect of CI pathology may be one reason for the lack of new treatments for stroke and SAH. Refocusing on the primary causes of CI disease may therefore yield more success.

Our recent research demonstrates a rapid change in peripheral inflammatory responses after experimental stroke. Furthermore, a peripheral inflammatory stimulus prior to experimental stroke worsens outcome, which mirrors clinical findings. The overall aim of this project therefore is to further investigate the contribution of peripheral inflammation to CI. More specifically this project will establish whether the brain endothelium and parenchyma in animals with a raised peripheral inflammatory profile is in a 'primed' state, which makes it more susceptible to increased injury in response to experimental stroke and/or SAH.

To achieve the above aim relevant experimental models of stroke and SAH will be used along with immunohistochemical, multiplex and modern bioimaging techniques.

The studentship: This studentship is available to UK and other EU nationals (due to funding criteria) and provides fees and stipend subject to eligibility. Applicants should hold (or be about to obtain) a first or upper second class honours degree in a related area.

CREAM is a Marie Curie Initial Training Network, funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Programme and will start on September 1, 2009.

CREAM includes 20 PhD (three years) and 3 postdoc (two years) projects. All projects are related to developing ecological models for the risk assessment of chemicals, primarily pesticides. Many projects include, or even focus on, empirical work.

CREAM is offering a total of 20 Ph.D. positions and 3 postdoctoral positions, which will be formally advertised in September 2009 with expected start dates in late 2009 or early 2010. CREAM is an EC funded Initial Training Network of 13 partner organisations and 9 associated partner organisations from 9 European countries. The partners in CREAM represent the main sectors involved in chemical risk assessment (industry, academia, regulatory authorities) and who are interested in exploring how mechanistic effect models can add value to the risk assessment process. The overall aim of CREAM is to develop and experimentally validate a suite of mechanistic effect models that are based on Good Modelling Practice. CREAM will provide world class training for the next generation of ecological modellers, emphasizing transparency and rigorous model evaluation as core elements of the modelling process.

The selection is open to graduates regardless of nationality, in possession of a five year university degree or its non-Italian equivalent. In cases where the University degree of the candidate is not officially recognized as equivalent, the Council of the SAS will rule on the validity of the degree qualification obtained abroad for the sole purpose of allowing participation in the admission process.

The selection is also open to candidates who do not already possess the required degree, provided conferral takes place by October 31st, 2009. In this case admission will be conditional, and the candidate will be required, under D.P.R. n. 445/00 art. 47, to present the degree certificate or a notarised copy before November 10th, 2009.

The Admission to doctoral courses is independent from the age of the candidate. For the award of a scholarship candidates must have obtained the degree valid for admission to doctoral courses from no more than six years on the expiring date of this call.

Science Foundation Ireland has recently made a major award of a Strategic Research Cluster (SRC) Grant to a group of researchers based at the Tyndall National Institute and University College Cork, Dublin City University and Queen s University Belfast together with industrial partners Intel Ireland and Seagate Technologies. This SRC is entitled FORME - for Functional Oxides and Related Materials for Electronics. The specific aims of this Cluster are to study a range of processes associated with the development of next-generation CMOS devices and also to work towards device architectures that go far beyond CMOS technology. The team concerned represents a mixture of Materials Chemists, Physicists and industrial partners with activities spanning materials synthesis and characterisation, advanced thin layer growth, surface science studies and the optical, electrical and magnetic characterisation of a wide range of oxides and related materials.

PhD Student Position in Medical Image Analysis

"Soft-Tissue Segmentation"

Within the scope of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) for Computer Aided and Image Guided Interventions (CO-ME) the Medical Image Analysis Center (MIAC) at the University of Basel is developing methods to segment facial soft tissue.

The available challenging PhD position is part of a larger multidisciplinary project in the field of cranio maxillo facial (CMF) surgery planning. The project involves both theoretical and applied research aspects, and will be performed in close collaboration with researchers of multiple Universities in Switzerland and the MR physics group at the University Hospital in Basel in particular.

The state-of-the-art methods for segmenting anatomical structures in the head for CMF surgery planning require lot of manual intervention and is a time-consuming task. The focus of this work will thus be on automising this tedious manual segmentation task as much as possible. The problem will be addressed by using a model-based segmentation approach combined with optimised MR sequences. These MR sequences are developed in close collaboration with a PhD student from the MR physics group.

This project will be supported by top clinicians in the area. The candidate must have strong communication skills, the ability to combine basic research activities with the needs of clinicians and be willing to work in a clinical environment.

We are looking for a motivated, proactive person with a background in computer science, biomedical engineering, physics, mathematics or other related field. The candidate will have solid programming skills, as well as a good background in general engineering mathematics. A MSc degree or comparable previous experience is required to join the PhD program at our University.

Developing Novel Chemical Sensors Systems for Measuring Water Quality in the Environment

Date of expiry: Wednesday, 8th July 2009

This project aims to a develop novel, high-resolution water quality measuring system using innovative miniaturised "lab-on-a-chip" sensing devices to measure substances of environmental importance. It will require closely integrated development of the chemical and fluidic system together the electronic sensing and signal processing. Data obtained from using these sensors will help advance the science of hydro chemistry and should lead to a cheap and reliable method for monitoring water quality. This will help regulatory agencies, industries and agriculture monitor and mitigate their environmental impacts, and provide a method for the early detection of polluted water supplies, for instance from toxic algal blooms or acts of terrorism.

The engineering student will work on areas such as electronic sensor development, signal processing, system design and modelling, self-test and diagnosis; collaborating closely with the chemistry student.

Other partners involved are the University of Reading, the Center for Ecology and Hydrology and the Environment Agency. The Reading student will focus on field deployment of the devices, analysing the resulting data and developing pollutant transport modeling techniques.

Applicants should have a good (1st or 2.1) and relevant BEng or MEng degree in electronic, mechatronic or systems engineering. The studentship will suit candidates who have an engineering background which includes electronics and have an interest in sensors, systems design modeling and simulation, and mixed systems testing. There will also be some fieldwork in evaluating the sensor systems in the environment and the opportunity to work with professional staff in the other institutions. This will be excellent training in the inter-disciplinary, inter-institutional methods characteristic of modern research.

Numerical and Experimental 3-D Study of strain/stress fields in Engineering and Life sciences

The successful candidate will spend 18 months in Châlons en Champagne and 18 months in Loughborough, aiming for a dual doctorate degree.

Loughborough University has a world-leading reputation in the development and application of optical interferometric techniques for measuring strain fields on the surfaces of engineering components. The Mechanics and Manufacturing Laboratory at ENSAM has extensive expertise in the area of inverse identification of material properties from full-field measurements. This project aims to extend novel optical techniques to allow the mapping of strain fields and mechanical properties inside the volume of weakly scattering materials, in a non-contact way and with high sensitivity and high spatial resolution. Specific problems that will be addressed include:

Inverse problem solution: Extraction of depth-resolved distributions of material properties inside weakly scattering materials by means of Finite Element Updating (FEU) and the Virtual Fields Method (VFM) from experimentally measured displacement fields.
Medical applications: Evaluation of elastic modulus distributions from displacement measurements through-the-thickness of the human eye cornea to numerically predict corneal behaviour after laser ablation in refractive surgery.
Engineering applications: Measurement of 3-D displacement fields inside 3-D granular packs under known loads to evaluate contact forces and the resulting stress distribution within the pack.
The ideal candidate will hold, or be expecting, a 1st class or 2:1 honours degree in mechanical engineering or physical science subject, preferably with proven experience in Finite Element Analysis. Strong theoretical and numerical analysis skills, proven ability to undertake experimental projects and proficiency in MATLAB/C++ computer programming language are also required.

At Châlons en Champagne, a scholarship grant of 13,200 € p.a. will be paid by the Champagne Ardenne Regional Council. At Loughborough University, a scholarship grant of £12,600 p.a. plus PhD student fees will be paid by the Wolfson School for EU applicants; in all other cases the student will be responsible for £4,600 towards the cost of the full overseas rate.

The project will develop mathematical and statistical methods for modelling incompletely observed traits (censored or truncated) and events of low frequency in large-scale quantitative genetic studies. Computer skills and some experience with applied statistics are required.

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in GNSS Signal Processing Structures and Architectures. This studentship is funded by the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and is part of a wider project involving four universities (Nottingham, UCL, Imperial College London and the University of Westminster) and nine commercial companies and government agencies. The project involves collaborative research focussing on the exploitation of new Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals.

This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate with a good undergraduate degree (minimum 2.1 or equivalent) and preferably a Master degree (or equivalent) in any Electronic, Communication or Control Engineering, or Applied Physics. The successful candidate will be based formally at the University of Westminster, but will be expected to collaborate extensively with the other partners of the ‘New Signals' consortium.

The studentship is open to all (UK, EU and non-EU) applicants. It covers the cost of home student tuition fees (£3,800 per annum), providing a maintenance stipend of £15,000 (tax-free) for the 08/09 academic year, rising to £15,322 for the 09/10 academic year (subject to satisfactory progress). This prestigious studentship in Radio Resource Management for Future Mobile Cellular Radio Networks is now available to overseas applicants as well as UK and EU citizens.

Introduction:
Green Radio is one of three exciting and innovative research programmes sponsored by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC, www.epsrc.ac.uk ) and the Mobile Virtual Centre of Excellence (VCE) in Mobile & Personal Communications (www.mobilevce.com) as part of its Core-5 research programme. Green Radio is an industry-led collaboration with the Universities of Edinburgh, Bristol, Kings College London and Swansea.

Given the worldwide growth in the number of mobile subscribers and the increasing contribution of information technology to the overall energy consumption of the world, there is an urgent environmental need to reduce the energy requirements of radio access networks. From an operator perspective, reduced energy consumption translates directly to lower Operating Expenditure (OPEX). These are the key drivers of the Green Radio programme. Both wide area public networks (traditionally "cellular") and local area private networks (traditionally "wireless LAN") will be considered, recognising that the structure of a Green Radio Network may differ from today's radio networks.

PhD Project Definition:
Green Radio will develop new energy efficient cellular deployment architectures based on ringing BSs closer to mobile users. Increasing BS and/or relay densities increases inter- cell interference levels. Consequently inter-cell interference is a major barrier that impedes the realisation of energy efficient mobile cellular networks. Your role will be to exploit cooperation between BSs(and relays) in an LTE-advanced RAN in order to limit inter-cell as well as intra-cell interference by the appropriate use of radio resource management (RRM) techniques.
Eligibility:

You should hold a 1st class Honours degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a related master's degree at distinction level. The studentships would also suit mature individuals with relevant industrial experience. For UK and EU applicants, the studentship will cover the full university tuition fees and provide a minimum starting stipend of £12,940 pa. The primary focus of the Fulbright Program in Indonesia is to promote mutual understanding between the Republic of Indonesia and the United States of America through educational exchange and academic scholarship. Fulbright scholarships are available to Indonesian citizens with the appropriate qualifications as stipulated in the program descriptions listed below.

General Requirements for All Programs :

A demonstrated commitment to the chosen field of study
A willingness to return to Indonesia upon completion of the Fulbright program.

Clear and concise written a Study Objectives and Research Proposals are extremely important factors in being considered for all Fulbright Programs.

Important Required Testing Information:

Degree student candidates must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE for all fields except Law and Business) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT for business administration, finance, accounting) if they are selected. It is recommended that applicants begin to familiarize themselves with the above test.

Fulbright Student Program Alumni
Fulbright student program alumni are not eligible to apply to get a second student grant.

Preference will be given to applicants who serve as faculty members of state or private institutions of higher education in Indonesia. However, all qualified individuals are eligible to apply.

Applicants will possess:
•A Sarjana (S1) degree with a minimum GPA of 3.00 (4.00 scale)
•A minimum TOEFL score of 550

Fulbright-Freeport Master’s Degree Program
Preference will be given to Indonesian citizens from Papua who are faculty members at state or private institutions of higher education.

Applicants will possess:
•Sarjana (S1) degree with a minimum GPA of 3.00 (4.00 scale)
•A demonstrated commitment to the development and service of Papua
•A minimum TOEFL score of 500

Ph.D. PROGRAM

Fulbright Presidential Scholarship Program (Ph.D. Program)

This open competition is for applicants who serve or plan to serve as faculty members of state or private institutions of higher education in Indonesia.

Applicants will possess:
•Master’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale)
•A determination to take up academic positions in higher education upon their return
•A minimum TOEFL score of 575. A score of 550 will be considered for certain fields

RESEARCH PROGRAM
This research grant is intended to provide U.S. research opportunities to Indonesian university doctoral candidates who are in the final stages of writing their dissertation. The grant duration is for a period of three to six months. Applicants should have a minimum TOEFL score of 575 to participate in this program.

Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program for Mid-Career Professionals

Hubert H. Humphrey fellowships enable Indonesian mid-career professionals to participate in non-degree programs that combine academic coursework at the graduate level with professional development activities in the U.S. for a perioed of one academic year (9 months). Candidates are typically administrators in leadership positions with a minimum of five years of work experience who represent either the public or non-profit private sectors, including Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) who are committed to public service.

Applicants will possess:
•Sarjana (S1) degree with a minimum GPA of 2.75 (4.00 scale)
•A minimum TOEFL score 525.

Fulbright Visiting Specialist Program

The Fulbright Visiting Specialists Program provides grants for Indonesian scholars and practitioners to conduct intensive three to six week programs of teaching, lecturing and public outreach on topics in Islamic civilization and developments in the Muslim world. Ideal applicants are scholars or practitioners with outstanding records of academic, professional, community service, the ability to address topics in Islamic civilization in addition to teaching in their own disciplines and about Indonesia, the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically in English and the desire to serve as a cultural ambassador. The program does not support research and provides no time for the participants to pursue personal projects. Participants may be in fields of Islamic and area studies, political science, international relations, business and economics, history, women’s studies, journalism, sociology, religion, literature, anthropology, and the arts.

International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for Ph.D. Study

The AMINEF is pleased to announce the availability of approximately 40 awards to be competed worldwide under the aegis of International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for Ph.D. study at top U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering for the 2008 - 2009 academic year matriculants. Fulbright scholarships for this particular program are available to Indonesian citizens with the appropriate qualifications as stipulated below.

Applicants will possess:
•A Bachelor and/or Master’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.00 scale)
•Undergraduate students who will complete the degree before August 1, 2008 may also apply
•A minimum TOEFL score of 580 at the time of application
•A minimum GRE quantitative score of 700 (GRE test will be required if selected for nomination)

FULBRIGHT FOREIGN LANGUAGE (BAHASA INDONESIA)TEACHING ASSISTANT (FLTA) PROGRAM

Applicants must be English language teachers or currently in training to become an English language teacher and must be able to demonstrate a commitment to English language teaching upon return to Indonesia following the award. The program is for one academic year (9 months) and requires the grantee to teach Indonesian language and culture in the U.S. for 20 hours per week and to enroll in at least two U.S. Studies and/or ESL methodology classes per semester under a full tuition waiver.

Applicants who are no older than 29 years of age at the time of application will possess:
•a Sarjana (S1) degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (4.00 scale)
•a minimum TOEFL score of 550.

Job description:

The candidate will prepare a PhD thesis within the framework of a project entitled "From orbital imaging to molecular quantum similarity in momentum space" (financial support by the Fund for scientific Research _ Flanders and the University of Hasselt). The first goal of the project is to develop and apply theoretical methods for quantitative interpretations of advanced orbital imaging experiments employing Electron Momentum Spectroscopy (EMS), taking into into account conformational mobility as well as electron correlation and relaxation - EMS is a powerful technique which enables straightforward determinations of orbital momentum densities from an angular analysis of electron-impact ionization & scattering cross-sections. A second aspect of the project pertains to the calculation from these densities of new criteria of molecular similarity, of relevance for the pharmaceutical industry, and of efficient descriptors of the chemical reactivity, in collaboration with the division of quantum chemistry at the University of Ghent (Prof. P. Bultinck). This proposed research project is a continuation of a PhD thesis that has been awarded by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemists.

Diploma:
Academic license (4 years), master (5 years) of equivalent diploma (bvb. DEA) in chemistry, physics, or materials sciences, or civil engineering in chemistry, physics, or materials sciences. Students who will complete their study this year can also apply.

Offer :
Scholarship for a PhD in Theoretical Chemistry / Chemical Physics within the research group of Michael S. Deleuze (awards by the World Association of Theoretically Oriented Chemists and by the Royal Flemisch Academy of Belgium for Sciences and Arts). The scholarship is available for a period of 4 years.
It consists of a first appointment of 2 years, followed by a prolongation of 2 years unless negative evaluation of the first period. The scholarship is subject to social security. Important computer facilities and a supporting
